COLUMBIA, S.C. — A civil rights activist whose challenge to segregation led to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision has died.

The Rev. Dr. Simon Bouie was arrested in 1960 for sitting at an all-white lunch counter in Columbia, South Carolina.

The case reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where his conviction was overturned.

The court ruled that South Carolina violated constitutional due process protections.

Bouie was 86 years old.
