Law enforcement family honors fallen officers with march through uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers paid tribute to their lost colleagues Friday morning as they held their annual Peace Officers Memorial Service in uptown.

CMPD and officers from all over the region marched through the Queen City to honor fallen officers.

Law enforcement marched from police headquarters to First Baptist Church on East 3rd Street, while family members of those fallen officers marched behind them.

Among them was Stephanie Stancil and her family. Her husband, Capt. Anthony Stancil, was killed while working off-duty in 1998.

On Friday, his widow remembered him as a good officer and a dynamic family man.

"He loved his family. He was a family man that did what he could to take care of his family and I am so proud of him for that," she said.

Anthony Stancil left behind a 2-year-old son, who is now 22 and works for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
