Man accused of firing rounds into garage at Salisbury Police Department

SALISBURY, N.C. — A 32-year-old Davidson County man is accused of firing several shots at a garage into the Salisbury Police Department, officials said.

On Feb. 28, police said Bruce Richard Godwin walked up to a Salisbury police officer in the department’s garage to say he was just hired and needed to get some of his equipment.

The officer didn’t recognize Godwin and advised him to leave, which he did.

On March 1 at about 5:30 a.m., Godwin returned and parked his car in a parking lot beside the police department. He waited about 30 minutes until officers got there before the morning shift briefing.

Godwin fired four rounds from a handgun into the parking garage while officers were parked inside.

One round went through the ventilation system and into the garage.

Godwin fled the scene, before officers knew what happened.

Godwin was caught on surveillance video and was named the suspect.

The Salisbury Police Criminal Division obtained warrants for three counts of felony discharging weapon into an occupied property and five counts of felony assault on law enforcement with a firearm. A search warrant was also issued for Godwin’s Davidson County home.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office was notified, went to Godwin’s home and took him into custody.

Godwin was transferred to Salisbury and was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond.

The State Bureau of Investigation also assisted in the case.
