Man arrested, accused of shooting co-worker to death inside Monroe business

MONROE, N.C. — A man is behind bars after police said he shot and killed a co-worker late Wednesday night at a business in Monroe.

According to the Monroe Police Department, officers were called around 11:30 p.m. to Darnell Inc. on Airport Road for a shooting. When police arrived, they found Christion Threatt shot to death inside the warehouse.

Authorities said eight shell casings were on the ground.

Detectives said Threatt was working at his station when his co-worker, Kendrick Reid, came back from his break, walked up to Threatt, and began shooting. Reid left the scene before police arrived.

No motive for the crime has been determined yet.

Throughout the night, police searched for Reid and learned he was in Chesterfield County. Deputies in South Carolina found Reid Thursday morning and took him into custody. The gun that police think Reid used was also found.

“Officers worked throughout the night interviewing witnesses and following leads to locate the suspect,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gillard. “While we are happy to have the suspect in custody, we are disappointed that such a senseless act of violence was perpetrated, especially in a setting where innocent people could have been injured or even killed. In these trying times, we need to do better as a community to stop things like this from happening. We need to value life, look at what we can do to influence our community for the good, and not turn to violence.”

Police said both Reid and Threatt had only been working at the company for a few weeks and had been hired from a staffing agency.

Reid has been charged with first-degree murder and discharging a firearm in an occupied building. The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed.
