CHARLOTTE — A 32-year-old Charlotte man with a criminal history spanning nearly a decade faces multiple charges after allegedly threatening and assaulting several people across the city in recent weeks.
Evin Curtis Sims was arrested following incidents at public transit stops and a local gas station. He has been repeatedly arrested and released on bond over the past month.
Sims’ recent contacts with law enforcement involve allegations of harassment at a light rail station, verbal threats against pedestrians, and a physical assault involving a traffic cone.
On Sept. 19, Sims allegedly approached a woman sitting with her children at the Tyvola light rail station.
According to court records and the victim, Sims walked up to her, threw an unknown liquid on her children, and began issuing threats. A Charlotte resident who was targeted in the encounter recalled attempting to turn him away.
“I was like ‘leave me alone,’ and he was like ‘oh you’re alone, you’re all alone, no one is going to help you,’” she said.
The woman fled the area and called police after Sims allegedly threatened another bystander at the light rail stop.
“I just wanted to be done with it. I just wanted it to be over. I wanted to get away from this guy,” she said.
Following the incident, authorities arrested Sims and charged him with communicating threats and fare evasion. He was held on a $10,000 bond before bonding out several days later.
The victim voiced concern over public safety in the area following the encounter.
“It was really upsetting to me. I’m native to Charlotte; I love Charlotte,” she said. “Where’s the line where you can kind of do normal things in this city and it’s ok to feel safe?”
Five days after bonding out on Sept. 22, Sims was involved in another series of incidents on Sept. 27.
Police reported that Sims first threatened a woman walking her dog on Queens Avenue, telling her, “I am going to beat you, I am going to punch you.”
Hours later, court records state Sims attacked two women with a traffic cone at a Circle K gas station on East Boulevard, injuring one woman before fleeing the scene.
Court records show Sims was previously arrested on Aug. 27 for failure to appear on a $500 bond.
That case stemmed from a 2022 incident where he allegedly attempted to flee an officer escorting him off Charlotte Area Transit System property for violating a 24-hour ban.
His criminal history in the city also includes a 2017 arrest for disorderly conduct at a terminal and failure to provide proof of fare, a charge that was ultimately dismissed.
