UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A man in Union County was bitten by a cat that tested positive for rabies, according to Union County government officials on Monday.
The victim was bitten on White Store Pageland Road, which is just north of the North Carolina state line. Officials didn’t say when the man was bitten by the cat.
According to a post shared on Facebook by Union County officials, the stray cat tested positive for rabies on Monday. The cat was killed after biting the man.
Officials didn’t identify the victim or give his current condition.
Rabies, if treated quickly after a bite and before symptoms begin, can be cured. However, once symptoms start, the disease is nearly 100% fatal.
Union County Animal Services urged residents to not leave food outside for animals, along with making sure your pets are up to date on vaccinations.
