North Carolina State Highway Patrol

A 68-year-old Lincolnton man died Thursday afternoon following a three-vehicle collision on U.S. 64 near Ward Green Lane in Caldwell County.

Jackie Wayne Mayo was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred at approximately 12:19 p.m. when Mayo, operating a 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound on U.S. 64, failed to reduce speed for heavy traffic stopped in the travel lane.

The motorcycle struck the rear-left quarter of a stopped 2018 Honda Pilot, deflected into oncoming eastbound traffic and collided with an eastbound 2003 GMC pickup truck.

Neither of the drivers of the other two vehicles was injured in the collision.

An initial investigation by the State Highway Patrol determined that neither speed nor alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Law enforcement officials confirmed no charges will be filed.
