WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A North Carolina man called the FBI and admitted he broke into the U.S. Capitol during January’s attack, but the FBI said his story didn’t quite match up.
The FBI released a picture searching for a man carrying a President Trump flag inside the Capitol building.
Matthew Wood called them, and admitted it was him. Officials said Wood signed the picture during an FBI interview.
Wood told agents he was pushed toward the window by a crowd outside and went inside the Capitol to avoid being trampled.
But the FBI released pictures showing him waiting as someone smashed the window out with a two-by-four, then jumping through and holding his flag.
They also say they have video of him standing in the Capitol Rotunda encouraging protesters to confront police.
Wood also admitted to going inside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.
He was arrested Friday in Winston-Salem.
The FBI estimates at least 800 people broke inside the Capitol building. So far, they have arrested just under 300 of them.
