Man shot while breaking into grandfather’s home dies days later

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A man who was shot after breaking into his grandfather’s home last week in Catawba County has died from his injuries.

Police said Jessie Gibson, 34, died Tuesday night at a Charlotte hospital.

According to detectives, the grandfather shot his grandson, Gibson, during a home invasion last Thursday morning. The shooting happened at a home on 38th Street in Long View.

Investigators said Gibson tried to rob his grandfather during a home invasion while wearing a mask and that his grandfather shot him, not knowing who he was.

The district attorney said no charges will be filed.

According to police, Gibson forced his way inside his grandfather’s home wearing a mask. Officers said when Gibson began assaulting his grandfather, the grandfather grabbed his gun and fired, striking Gibson several times.

Police said the mask was found during a search a short distance from the scene.

Channel 9 crews on the scene could see some damage to the front door of the home.

After the shooting, investigators believe Gibson somehow managed to get back to Lowman’s Motor Court where he was living about a mile away.

It was there, police said, that Gibson’s girlfriend called for help.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty interviewed several people at the motel who told him the grandson was having difficulty making his rent and had spoken about that the day before.

Officials tried to fly Gibson to a hospital but they decided at the last minute to take him by ambulance. We’re told the grandfather was also rushed to the hospital because he was assaulted during the home invasion.
