Man hit by bullet in barrage of gunfire at Salisbury park

SALISBURY, N.C. — A barrage of gunfire near the Salisbury City Park on Monday left a man injured and a house and vehicle damaged by stray rounds, police said Wednesday in a news release. Authorities said they do not have any suspects.

Officers got to the intersection of West Miller Street and Club House Road at about 5:30 p.m. and found 28 spent firearm shells scattered about the area.

At that time, Antwaun Reynard Miller, 30, of Salisbury, went to the Rowan Regional Medical Center, because he had been shot. Miller was hit by the gunfire reported near the park. His injuries were not serious, police said.

Officers located a vehicle, which was also believed to be related to the incident, that left the scene and had bullet holes in it.

A home on Club House Drive was shot into, but no one was hit, police said.

A visitor at the park was taken to a hospital due to stress from the incident. They were not shot.

“Our community should not and will not tolerate violence,” Police Chief Jerry Stokes said in a news release. “In this instance, several visitors to the park, including children, were endangered by the careless and reckless actions of others. When our residents and visitors, and particularly our children, cannot go to one of our parks for recreational activities everyone suffers because of those who choose to settle disputes with firearms and place others at risk. We continue to see firearms stolen from vehicles across our city, which contributes to gun crime overall. I would encourage everyone in Salisbury, whether you live, work, or visit here, to say something if you see something, and seek other ways to resolve your grievances rather than turning to gun violence.”

“This 41-acre park features a recreation center, two play structures, a climbing wall, 4 tennis courts, six pickleball courts, two picnic shelters with tables, grills, a four-acre scenic lake and the Patriots Flag Concourse and Memorial,” according to the city’s website.
