Mecklenburg County inmates get in-person visits through end of month

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Inmates at the Mecklenburg County Jail will get a Christmas wish.

New Sheriff Garry McFadden is allowing in-person visits during the week of Christmas.

Currently, inmates can only visit with family and friends via video, and after two free visits each week, it costs money.

McFadden believes allowing inmates to visit with family in person will lower the chances that inmates will commit another crime when they get out.

"I think it's good for the people that's in there,” former inmate Jamel Richardson said. “That's a great thing."

McFadden says the free in-person visitation runs through Dec. 31.
