Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office investigating inmate death

CHARLOTTE — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate on Saturday, according to a release.

Tommy Hucks, 42, was found unresponsive in his cell around 9:46 a.m. by a detention officer.

Officers started CPR and continued until EMS arrived.

The Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg EMS arrived and continued to try to resuscitate Hucks, but he was pronounced dead at 10:26 a.m.

Hucks had only been in the detention center for a few days. He had been processed on June 5.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation as the medical examiner determines the cause of death.

“MCSO is very dismayed to report the death of Mr. Hucks,” Sheriff Garry McFadden said. “It’s always difficult to experience the loss of anyone in our custody and care. We send our deepest condolences to Mr. Hucks’ family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
