CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Michael Jordan has donated $10 million to the University of North Carolina School of Social Work in honor of his mother, Deloris P. Jordan.
The contribution represents the largest single gift in the history of the School of Social Work.
The donation will expand the reach and impact of the Jordan Institute for Families and the Global Social Development Innovations Center, which will be renamed the Deloris P. Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center.
The funding aims to make entering the social work profession more accessible while strengthening the workforce needed to address challenges facing children, families, and communities.
The gift establishes the Jordan Family Scholars program to assist Master of Social Work students facing increased financial barriers to graduate education.
During a celebration marking the gift, 10 students were named as the inaugural group of Jordan Family Scholars. Each student received a $12,500 scholarship. The gift celebration launched the Deloris P. Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center’s Global Research Symposium. The symposium took place Oct. 6-7 at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.
