NORTH CAROLINA — This week will mark two years since Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina.
Buncombe County says more than 140 recovery projects are underway. That includes rebuilding parks and working on backup power systems.
In parts of Henderson County, like Bat Cave, roads and bridges are still being rebuilt.
Overall, officials feel like they’re in better shape for the future.
“We’ve learned a lot from Tropical Storm Helene, how we’ve responded,” said Buncombe County Helene Recovery Officer, Kevin Madsen. “We’ve rebuilt those partnerships and those collaborations, so I feel like we are better prepared today than we were.”
Officials say the region remains vulnerable to another storm.
