Driver arrested after motorcyclist killed in hit-and-run crash, troopers say

NEWTON, N.C. — A Catawba County deputy responded to a fatal hit-and-run crash Wednesday that his own family member was involved in.

The wreck happened on Highway 16 near Mount Olive Church Road around 6:15 p.m.

According to Highway Patrol troopers, Troy Faust was riding his motorcycle on Highway 16 when the driver of a 2004 Ford pickup tried to turn left onto Mount Olive Church Road, failing to yield.

Faust, 26, died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, 65-year-old Timothy Roberts, did not stop and immediately fled the scene, investigators said.

Roberts was found a few miles away and charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle and felony hit-and-run.

Faust is the brother of Catawba County Sheriff Deputy Brandie Troulle, and the brother-in-law of a state trooper who responded to the wreck.

Catawba County Sheriff Don Brown said deputies have come together to support the Troulle family.

Roberts was in court Thursday but didn’t speak with reporters as he left the courthouse.
