NC High Country eagerly prepares for weekend snow

BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Many living in the North Carolina mountains were hoping for snow this weekend. On Friday, they told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty they were keeping their fingers crossed.

Beech Mountain has only gotten 28 inches of snow this year, but they typically average more than 80 inches of snow.

When Faherty arrived Friday morning in the High Country, temperatures were in the 40s. But that was expected to change Saturday night.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said by the end of the day Friday, they would have plows on all of their trucks and crews would be on standby for the weekend.

Faherty did not see anyone preparing the roadway Friday, and that may have been because when the storm moves in, it is expected to start off as rain. That would wash away any salt put down ahead of time.

In Boone, the NCDOT told Faherty they’ve only had a few storms this winter and nothing more than a few inches of snow. Faherty saw students at Appalachian State University wearing shorts to class Friday hoping for some snow this weekend.

“It’s been pretty underwhelming,” said App State student JP Starling. “Got away from my hometown to come get some snow, I haven’t really gotten that so far. I’m hoping Sunday can exceed my expectations.”
