Neighbors call man ‘irresponsible’ for pulling out gun at Birkdale Village

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — James Harrison was brought to jail close to midnight Saturday and managed to get out about eight hours later.

The 38-year-old man is accused of causing a stampede at Birkdale Village which made customers panic, like Austin Davis and Riley Warren.

“Yeah, it was crazy ‘cause nobody was yelling,” said Davis. “It was a stampede of people.”

“When you see a mass of people running and you don’t know for what reason, you’re gonna follow,” Warren said.

Huntersville police say that Harrison pointed a gun at another man and threatened to use it. No shot was fired and nobody was hurt.

Eron Sanchez is a gun owner and says that was an irresponsible choice.

“I’m concealed carry myself, that’s why you go to those courses,” Sanchez said. “Honesty, you don’t pull a gun on somebody just because you want to.”

Sanchez says he’ll think twice before going to Birkdale. Regan Crely works in the area and she says her parents are worried about that.

“I’ve had many of my friends’ parents, my own mom texting me, asking me to come home,” said Crely. “Asking me if I’m OK when I’m at work. It’s definitely gotten a little bit crazy in Birkdale.”

The shopping area is very popular and to Neal Stratton, that’s a blessing and a curse.

“Developers have done a lot and I think that’s what made it so popular, but also potentially so dangerous because there is thousands of people gathering here every weekend now and it used to not be that way,” Stratton said.

We reached out to Birkdale about this incident and we’re waiting to hear back.

We did check Harrison’s background and he does not have a criminal record.
