Nor’easter forms, threatens East Coast with floods, gusty winds

CHARLOTTE — Flooding rains, gusty winds, and beach erosion are all possible along the East Coast as a developing nor’easter forms in the Atlantic.

The storm has already caused flooding issues in the Outer Banks, where Highway 12 was shut down early Thursday between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe due to severe overwash that has damaged the road.

Our initial assessment of the damaged section of NC12 near the Pea Island Visitor Center indicates about 500' of undermined and/or broken pavement. Northeasterly winds will continue to gust as high as 50 mph along the Outer Banks Thursday night before diminishing slightly on Friday. Coastal flood warnings continue through Friday night along the Outer Banks.

High winds, heavy rain, and beach erosion are all likely as this storm system continues up the coast through the weekend. Flood alerts extend through coastal Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and into New England.

The impacts from the storm system will be even worse this weekend with a full moon, which will bring higher tides than normal to the coast.

Power outages and flight disruptions are also likely through early next week.
