Nor’easter weakens after causing one death, massive power outages, and damage

OUTER BANKS, N.C. — The massive nor’easter hammering the Eastern seaboard is weakening, but coastal residents are being warned not to let their guard down.

The storm is bringing torrential rain, high winds, and massive waves to New York and New Jersey.

At least one person is dead in New York, where a city housing authority employee died after a report of a fallen tree.

Crews are working to restore power to tens of thousands of people in the area.

Here in the Carolinas, the storm caused damage to the Avon fishing pier, which is south of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse along the Outer Banks.

It’s still too early to know how extensive the damage is or how long it will take to make repairs.

Along N.C.-12, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will build a protective dune before it can start repairs. The storm took roughly 500 ft of the highway near Pea Island.
