Officials: Elderly man dies, woman hurt in Kannapolis house fire

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — An elderly man died in a house fire in Kannapolis on Thursday, according to a release from the Kannapolis Fire Department. Firefighters were able to rescue his wife from the blaze.

The fire was first reported early Thursday afternoon by the resident of the home on Dogwood Boulevard off Kannapolis Parkway, officials said.

Firefighters rescued a woman inside, but her husband, 88-year-old Joseph Brooks, died from injuries sustained in the fire.

The woman was taken to the hospital.

Investigators said the fire was accidental and caused by candles that were burning near something flammable.
