CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — Officials said Andy Heath Hartman, 40, was shot and killed on Bates Avenue at about 12:30 a.m.
The gunman, identified as Yates Franklin Mauney III by witnesses, left the scene and went to Kenwood Road, where he shot and killed himself, according to Gaston County police.

Friends of Hartman said he was a family man who leaves behind a wife and son.

Hartman was home Thursday night, when Mauney came over and shot him, police said.
Someone saw the shooting and called 911, police said.
"We're not going to release anything about the witness at this time," Cherryville Police Department Capt. Cam Jenks said.
Mauney then left and shot and killed himself, police said.
"It's a shame. Totally unusual for this area. It's sad," nearby resident Larry Roberts said.
Police have not released a motive or the relationship between the victims.
