Police: Driver who caused Brookshire fatal crash to be charged with DWI

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed in a multiple-vehicle wreck at the 3600 block of Brookshire Boulevard, according to police.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver who caused the fatal accident will face numerous charges including DWI, police said.

Police said Steven Johnson rear-ended Lesley John Dahm at the intersection of Brookshire Boulevard and Interstate 85.

The force of the impact killed Dahm.

The crash also caused a chain-reaction accident that sent Johnson and another driver to the hospital.

Channel 9 talked to one witness who saw the crash.   "We see a big ball of smoke coming from a truck ... that's what I seen a whole bunch of cars scattered everywhere," said Roy Jones.

Channel 9 learned that Johnson had been arrested just hours earlier -- around 3 a.m. Wednesday -- accused of having drug paraphernalia.

Officers said they were not aware of that charge.

Johnson is listed in the hospital in fair condition.

Police plan to book him into jail as soon as he is released.
