Speed a factor in deadly motorcycle crash in Gastonia, police say

GASTONIA, N.C. — One person has died following a motorcycle crash, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

Police said they were called to Chestnut Street near Franklin Boulevard around 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Alejandro Acosta, 23, was confirmed dead at the scene, according to Gaston Emergency Medical Services. Police said Friday that excessive speed from Acosta was a factor in the wreck.

Acosta was estimated, based on preliminary information, to be traveling between 90 and 100 mph in a 35 mph zone on E. Franklin Boulevard before the crash occurred, according to police.

Franklin Boulevard was closed at South Avon Street at the time of the wreck.

The crash is still under investigation.
