Man cited after accidentally shooting himself at SouthPark Mall, CMPD says

CHAROTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a shooting at SouthPark Mall Saturday.

Officers said they responded to the mall and found a man with an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

MEDIC took the victim to a local hospital with serious injuries. According to an incident report, he shot himself in his upper-right leg.

Police said they issued a carrying a concealed weapon citation and officers seized his gun. His identity has not been released at this point.

Officers said there is no threat to the public at this time and that they are not searching for any suspects.

Channel 9 employee Rachel Langlitz said she was shopping in Belk’s when she saw people running and crying, saying there was a shooting.

“It was like a stampede. Almost like one person started running, more people are running. And like more people are scared. So it was just like chaos,” Langlitz said.

Langlitz said she was then told by management over an intercom to leave the store.

“It was very scary seeing kids. They were just ... they had their American Girl Doll bags. Like they were just at the American Girl store to have fun at the mall. Now, they have this fear on their face and tears in their eyes. Which is just very scary,” Langlitz said.

John Mobley said he was in Nordstrom’s when a sea of shoppers started running his way. Seconds earlier, he said he heard a gunshot near the Lego store.

“Definitely utter panic. People didn’t really know what was going on,” Mobley said.

Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts reports that the mall reopened after the shooting was declared accidental. However, some stories chose to remain closed.

Simon Property Group, which owns SouthPark Mall, prohibits weapons inside its malls.

Officers have not released what caused the gun to be discharged or any other details at this point.
