2 arrested in connection with fatal shooting in Cornelius, police say

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Two men have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in a Cornelius neighborhood Saturday, according to police.

The Cornelius Police Department said they responded to reports about a shooting on the 18000 block of Lynne Lane shortly after 2:30 p.m.

“I heard the shots,” neighbor Elaine Deck said. “I understand (there was) shotgun. And it sounded like that. And then I came out to my neighbor. My neighbor next to me came out, as well, and by that time, we saw a police presence and medic.”

At the scene, police found 55-year-old James Johnson shot outside of his home. Johnson was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to police.

“Well, I was in my house, and I heard some shots, and my daughter heard them too,” another neighbor told Channel 9. “We thought they were just fireworks or something. I told her to go into the bathroom immediately, and I came to the window, and that’s when I saw two people with shotguns.”

After an investigation, police arrested Johnson’s neighbors: 53-year-old Arnaldo Munoz and 19-year-old Geovany Munoz.

Both men have been charged with first-degree murder, according to police.

Police said the victim and the suspects knew each other and the incident stemmed from a dispute among the three of them.

The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
