A year after the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan, local group helps bring refugees stateside

CHARLOTTE — One year after the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan, many Afghan refugees who supported U.S. troops gathered in Charlotte on Tuesday to reflect on the collapse of their country.

“I was born in war. I was raised in war I did my education in war. I was involved in war as a combat interpreter helping the U.S. Army and rebuild our country,” Bahroz “Blade” Mohmand told Channel 9′s Almiya White.

The Independence Fund, which supports people working to become U.S. citizens, organized the gathering this week. It gave people an outlet to share the fear they have for their country and the many people who remain there.

“They are still struggling to get out of Afghanistan, because what we hear right now, there is a lot of chaos,” Mohmand said.

In the video at the top of this webpage, Channel 9′s Almiya White reports on the change refugees hope to see as they worry about their future.
