CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers are riding a high after holding division rival Atlanta Falcons to three points yesterday.
Channel 9 Sports Reporter DaShawn Brown is looking at how the team is getting ready for next Sunday, and let’s just call it what it is: Quarterback Bryce Young is putting up historic numbers right now.
Young is one of two quarterbacks in NFL history who, at 25 years old or younger, put up the numbers he did in the first two weeks of the season.
Bryce was masterful against the Falcons yet again, going off for 287 yards and three touchdowns.
This is now back-to-back weeks that the Panthers offense scored more than 30 points.
For the record, the Panthers haven’t scored a combined 71 points at this point in the year ever before.
Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales said that finally having the same receiving targets certainly helps, but a lot of this is on Bryce.
“We’ve been fine-tuning this offense to fit Bryce’s strengths. Brad and I and [Mike] Bercovici and [Darrell] Bevell, everybody involved. Our goal is to create this so we’re doing what he does well and the special part is Bryce is seeing that, taking that, and then he’s putting his stamp on it,” Canales said.
On top of the consistency in the wide receiver room, Young has earned the respect of his newer teammates as well.
“Never rattled, if there’s an adjustment that needs to be made, [he’s] never yelling at people but you can tell there’s an urgency within him that he’s trying to bring people to where he’s going and the level he’s playing at. It rubs off on the offense,” said tight end Darren Waller.
Something else we’re watching right now: running back Jonathon Brooks suffered a groin injury Sunday.
Canales told us Brooks was still having imaging done on Monday. We should know more after practice Wednesday.
The Panthers will be on the road in Cleveland this Sunday at 1 p.m.
Our sports team will get you ready for the matchup against the Browns on Panthers Game Day, starting at 11 a.m. Sunday on Channel 9.
