Suspect taken into custody after nearly 7-hour standoff in southeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Police have taken a barricaded suspect into custody after a nearly 7-hour standoff in southeast Charlotte early Saturday morning.

It started around 4 a.m. when officers responded to Mill Valley Court for several calls about a disturbance with shots fired.

When officers got to the home, they found the front door open. Officers said they knocked on the door, announced themselves and the suspect came downstairs.

Officials said the officers asked the suspect to see his hands, the suspect showed them a gun and then, fired several rounds inside the house.

Officers then moved to positions of cover, established a perimeter around the house and SWAT officers and CMPD negotiators responded and tried to make contact with the suspect.

After several hours of attempted negotiations, SWAT deployed “less than lethal” irritants into the house in order to disorient the suspect. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody shortly before 11 a.m.

Authorities said no CMPD officers were hurt or fired their weapons during the incident.

Police said the name of the suspect will be released after he has been charged.

No other information has been released.
