Pilot dead after helicopter crashes in Union County, deputies say

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A helicopter pilot died after a crash in Union County on Sunday.

The crash happened near Belk Mill Road, south of Wingate, off Highway 601 between Monroe and Pageland.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said the helicopter was crop-dusting fields when it reportedly became tangled in power lines.

“It is a tragic accident, I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it than just a tragic accident,” said Tony Underwood with the sheriff’s office. “My understanding is the pilot in this case is a very experienced pilot, apparently just got a little bit too low today.”
