Man charged in west Charlotte woman's murder

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested Jerry Hunter in the death of a west Charlotte woman Wednesday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police found 53-year-old Sarah Acker's body after performing a welfare check at her home on State Street.

Acker's children had tried to get in contact with her but when they couldn't reach her they called police.

Family members told Channel 9 Hunter, 43, was her boyfriend.

Officers reported that they spotted Hunter driving Acker's car down Nations Ford Road and took him in for questioning. He was arrested hours later.

Investigators have not released a motive for the killing, but family members said Acker and Hunter had been fighting lately. Police said they'd responded to at least one call for service to the house in the past.

"I'm angry because I know that she didn't deserve it,” said Acker’s daughter, Shun Mangum. “She wouldn't' have been able to defend herself. She was sick a lot."

Channel 9 found that Hunter has a lengthy criminal past and was released from prison in August.
