Police drone, K-9 unit find driver on foot after 130-mph chase, deputies say

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A police drone using thermal imaging located a suspect on foot after he led authorities on a 130-mph chase in a Jaguar, the Chester County Sheriff’s office said.

Deputies in Chester County pulled over a Jaguar at about 1:30 a.m. Monday on Interstate 77 near mile marker 62.

The Jaguar stopped and two passengers got out with their hands up. The driver, later identified as Christopher Scott Mackins, sped away.

A chase started with speeds over 130 mph, and Mackins got off on Exit 55 (Great Falls Highway). The chase continued toward the Boyd Road area of Chester County when deputies lost sight of the car.

The sheriff’s office, along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, swarmed the area where the Jaguar was last seen.

Law enforcement spotted Mackins and a short chase ensued once again, which ended on Columbia Street in Chester.

Mackins got out and ran off into the darkness, deputies said.

A drone and K-9 team assisted in the search. The drone used its thermal camera to find Mackins and the the K-9 units were able to arrest him without further incident.

Mackins faces several charges related to the chase, and he was also wanted in several other counties.
