1 dead in shooting in northeast Charlotte neighborhood, police say

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Wednesday it had charged two suspects in connection with a deadly shooting that happened on Dec. 14 in northeast Charlotte.

Around 11 a.m. that day, CMPD said they were near the intersection of Dalphon Jones Drive and Katherine Kiker Road for the investigation. The intersection is in a residential area.

At the scene, Channel 9′s Dan Matics could see about 20 CMPD patrol cars. Police centered their investigation near the sidewalk. Matics learned the house near where the person was found isn’t part of the investigation.

CMPD identified the victim as 20-year-old David Lavell Manning.

On Dec. 14, officers took Jeremiah Cunningham, 20, into custody without incident.

On Dec. 22, Josiah Evans-Bailey, 20, turned himself into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Both suspects have been charged with murder.

“We do not have a lot of information at this point,” CMPD Major Brian Foley said the day of the shooting. “It is very preliminary in terms of the investigation. We have a team of 20 officers out here canvassing the neighborhood, knocking on doors to see if there is anyone that saw what happened. If they heard anything.”

In the last six months, the area has had three non-aggravated assaults and two burglaries, according to CMPD’s crime-mapping tool.

That is something detectives said is a far cry from how crime used to be.

“This is a neighborhood that, over the years, has improved quite a bit in terms of crime in the community, a very engaged community with CMPD,” Foley said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
