Police: Man arrested after hitting girlfriend, taking toddler, and running from officers

ROCK HILL, N.C. — Police have arrested a man who fled with his toddler after assaulting his girlfriend in Rock Hill.

Police said they responded to an apartment on Springdale Road around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday night regarding a domestic dispute.

Officers spoke to the victim. who said her boyfriend had hit her in the face and head many times before choking her and kicking her.

Police said the woman had visible injuries from the assault.

Thaddeus Phillips,40, was identified as the suspect.

The victim said Phillips left in a light-colored van with their toddler before officers arrived.

Police said they found the van on Red River Road and attempted a traffic stop.

Phillips drove off when officers approached but later crashed into the tree line and tried to escape on foot with the toddler.

After searching the area, Phillips and the child were found.

Neither of them was injured in the crash.

Phillips was taken into custody and transported to the Rock Hill City Jail on charges of domestic violence in the first degree, failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension, and child endangerment.

Phillips was also wanted by the York County Sheriff’s Office and the Chester County Sheriff’s Office on outstanding charges.
