CONCORD, N.C. — A man is behind bars after turning himself in for breaking into a church. Police even asked him why he was confessing. He told them it had been weighing on his mind.
Exactly one month ago, someone broke into Calvary Lutheran Church, in Concord, and stole a laptop computer and a monitor. According to police, the thief damaged doors, a window and a prayer box in the process.
"We're a nonprofit organization," church member Kristi Wilson said. "We're here to help people. So I was very upset when I heard about the burglary."
Weeks went by, and no one was caught. The church fixed the window, and members started to forget about the crime, but 20-year-old Jordon Cassell didn't forget. He turned himself in.
"I think that just shows how God works in everybody's heart," Wilson said. "It's just amazing."
In an arrest report obtained by Channel 9, Cassell said the "thought of him breaking into a church was weighing on his mind and he wanted to set things right."
"I just have to believe that the upbringing that he has been brought up with is finally taking," the suspect's mother, Rona Cassell, said.
She knew about the charges but didn't know her son confessed until Channel 9 told her. She said he had been on a dark path.
"I'm thankful for the conviction that he apparently felt when he turned himself in," Cassell said.
His mother believes this could be a fresh start.
"Hopefully, God will meet him where he is," Cassell said. "It's what he needs. And it sounds like he's already started."
The church is ready to forgive.
"He's come forward," Wilson said. "He came forward on his own. Jesus teaches us to forgive."
Jordon Cassell is behind bars. He has a $50,000 bond from this case and an additional $10,000 bond for another.
