The Political Beat Candidate Guide: North Carolina State House District 97 The Political Beat Candidate Guide: North Carolina State House District 97 (WSOC.)

North Carolina House District 97 covers Lincoln County, including Lincolnton, Denver and surrounding areas.

Heather Rhyne (R)

Why are you running?

I just finished my first term in the NC House serving District 97 (Lincoln County) and would like to continue the work I have started on healthcare and education reform. Representing Lincoln County is an honor and making sure the ideals and values of my constituents are represented in Raleigh is at the forefront of everything I do.

Are you in favor of the three constitutional amendments on North Carolina’s ballot? Why or why not?

Yes, I am always in favor of lower taxes and secure elections.

What should the state do about data centers?

The NC House passed a bill that would make data centers pay their own way, making sure any increased utility costs do not fall on the back of NC citizens. It also eliminates the tax breaks for data centers. This bill has been sent to the Senate.

CMS has faced numerous controversies over the past month, what, if anything, should state lawmakers do?

This remains to be seen. There is still an ongoing investigation into this issue. Because of my previous experience as a Board of Education member in Lincoln County I can attest to how important a good working relationship is between the Board and Superintendent. CMS Boards and Superintendents have struggled for quite a while and I believe the students are ultimately the ones that suffer because of it.

What legislation will you pursue to bring down costs?

As a pharmacist, I have been involved in a lot of healthcare legislation addressing the cost of prescription medications as well as access to healthcare. Ultimately, to drive down costs we need more competition. Making sure that there is a free market for people to operate in will aid in reducing costs.

What sets you apart from your opponent?

What sets me apart is my experience, my accessibility, and my willingness to make difficult decisions. I bring real-world experience in healthcare, education, and public service to the General Assembly. Lincoln County deserves authentic leadership that listens, stands firm, and delivers results.
