CMPD searching for car after woman killed in University City hit-and-run

CHARLOTTE — A 24-year-old woman died at a hospital after she was hit by two vehicles early Monday morning in the University City area, CMPD said in a news release.

Alexis Wilkins stepped out onto East Mallard Creek Church Road near North Tryon Street at about 2:30 a.m. when a 2001 Mercedes E320 struck her. The driver of the Mercedes stopped and called 911 when another vehicle, a red 2000′s Hyundai Tiburon, hit Wilkins and did not stop.

The Hyundai, which was believed to have been speeding, should have front-end damage to it. Police said the vehicle was last seen turning onto Mary Alexander Drive and going towards the UNCC campus.

The driver of the Mercedes was not impaired, police said.

Wilkins was taken to a hospital but died later in the day. The investigation into the hit-and-run is active and ongoing.

Police had shut down the eastbound lanes of Mallard Creek Church Road after the wreck as they collected evidence.
