Tuesday is the last day for the public to weigh in on whether one of the most expansive environmental regulations in the country should be rescinded.
The Roadless Rule prohibits logging and other types of commercial extraction in some of the most remote parts of national forests.
The USDA says repealing the rule would improve wildfire control and boost economic activity. Opponents say a repeal would threaten drinking water sources and increase wildfire risk by exposing more of the backcountry to human activity.
The Carolinas contain a combined 180,000 acres of roadless forest.
