2 charged in connection in string of robberies at Charlotte pawn, jewelry stores

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a jewelry store was robbed last Friday afternoon in south Charlotte. It was the latest in a string of robberies at jewelry and pawn stores and CMPD’s Armed Robbery Unit is seeking information on them.

Officers responded around 12:45 p.m. to reports of a robbery at the Brownlee Jewelers on Park Road off Woodlawn Road.

According to investigators, two suspects walked into the store and demanded jewelry before running out. No one was hurt.

CMPD released information and photos of four people believed to be involved with a robbery spree that stretches back to December.

  • At 6:36 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2020: National Pawn at 5418 South Blvd. Two suspects robbed the place after threatening people with a deadly weapon.
  • Shortly before 5:44 p.m. on Dec. 11, 2020: Cash America at 6300 South Blvd. Two suspects tried to smash display cases with a blunt object but when they couldn’t, they ran off.
  • On Dec. 11, 2020 at 6:41 p.m.: National Pawn at 5030 E. Independence Blvd. Two suspects smashed several display cases, stole items and fled.
  • Shortly after 5 p.m., on Dec. 29, 2020: Brownlee Jewelers at 8546 University City Blvd. Two suspects threatened people inside with a deadly weapon and stole some property. One of them smashed a display case and stole more things.
  • At 6:04 p.m. on Jan. 21: Smart Pawn and Jewelry at 7025 South Blvd. Two suspects, once again, threatened employees, smashed display cases and stole property from the business.
  • On Jan. 25 at 10:07 a.m.: Cash America Pawn at 300 E. Woodlawn Road. A suspect smashed more displays and stole several items.

On Feb. 25, CMPD said detectives charged Tysean Jermaker Williams, 28, and Corey Antonio Sanders, 34, for their involvement in several of the crimes.

Williams was recently arrested in Lexington, Kentucky. He was currently being held on other charges in Kentucky and will be extradited to North Carolina.

Detectives also charged Williams with another robbery on Jan. 21 at Malak Jewelers at 8042 Providence Road.

Williams will be charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of felony larceny and conspiracy to commit felony larceny.

Sanders was identified as a suspect in the robbery on Jan 21.

He was also charged in connection with a robbery on Feb. 8 at National Pawn and Jewelry at 2905 Eastway Drive.

Sanders, who was already in custody for unrelated charges, was served with warrants for two counts of felony larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit felony larceny.
