Arrest made in 2014 murder of Rock Hill father, police say

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Police in Rock Hill have arrested a suspect for the 2014 cold case killing of a local father.

Tony Heath was feet away from his children on the night of Nov. 14, 2014, when he was shot and killed. The father of seven was 41 years old.

“He was dedicated. He was an awesome family guy,” long-time friend and former roommate Charles Phillips said in 2014.

On Thursday, Jayquan Dante Wilmore, 27, was extradited to Rock Hill and served warrants for murder, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and criminal conspiracy.

On the night of the murder, investigators said Heath was standing outside his apartment off India Hook Road when two men wearing camouflage walked around the corner. They confronted him in the breezeway just outside his door, then shot him just before 9 p.m.

There were three bullet holes in the door and at least one more in the damaged siding along the wall.

At the time, police spokesman Mark Bollinger said much of the information gathered in the hours following the shooting wasn’t very helpful.

"It was one of those things last night where we had somebody tell us that somebody else told them that they saw them getting in a car," he said.

Other than camouflage jackets, there were no other description given of the assailants or a car they might have driven away in, though Bollinger said they were seen running away from the apartment.

Several neighbors who lived above and behind Heath told Channel 9 he was a good friend. They were too emotional to talk about what happened.

Phillips said whoever killed his friend needed to know what they were leaving behind.

"You took a good man away, and these kids are going to miss their father," he said.
