Several hospitalized after lightning strike near Alpine Coaster in Banner Elk

BANNER ELK, N.C. — At least six people were hospitalized after a lightning strike near a new coaster in Banner Elk, officials said.

Lightning struck the property at the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster Tuesday afternoon, officials said. It is unclear if the people were hit directly by lightning.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 3:44 p.m. for Avery County.

According to the coaster’s Facebook page, the ride was shut down until Wednesday because of the strike.

The Alpine Coaster has been open for about 11 weeks.

The ride begins 770 feet up the mountain and is powered by gravity. It can cruise up to 27 mph, but riders will be able to control the speed with a brake on the side of the car.

The six-acre attraction also includes a clubhouse, observation deck and gift shop.
