CMPD: Man arrested in Massachusetts and charged with north Charlotte murder

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested and charged a man with a December shooting that left one man dead and another hurt.

Officials said they found and arrested Michael John Handy, 46, in Massachusetts after identifying him as the suspect in the shooting.

Police said officers were called just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 6 for a welfare check at the intersection of North Graham Street and Oneida Road in north Charlotte. When they arrived, CMPD found two men inside a truck who had been shot.

MEDIC pronounced one of the men, 41-year-old David Esteban Castillo-Salinas, dead at the scene and the other victim was taken to the hospital with what police called non-life-threatening injuries.

CMPD said Handy is facing multiple charges including first degree murder, discharging a firearm into occupied property causing serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon intentions to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.

Handy is waiting for extradition to Mecklenburg County, investigators said.
