Man charged for fatal shooting in north Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a man for a fatal shooting in north Charlotte Sunday morning.

Charles Edward Smith, 33, has been charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to Mona Drive for a shooting just after 11:00 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found Christopher Washington, 33, inside a home who had been shot and was seriously hurt. MEDIC took him to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

About 15 minutes later, another person arrived at the hospital with serious injuries from a gunshot wound. They are expected to be okay.

Police believe this second person was also shot on Mona Drive and are working to confirm that information.

Police have not released what led up to the shootings.
