Silfab Solar faces resident protests ahead of planned restart of chemical commissioning

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A big restart could be on the way for a York County solar company located near two Fort Mill schools.

Silfab Solar announced that commissioning activities involving gases and chemicals may be coming soon.

However, some residents are pushing back and plan to protest Monday evening.

They said they are concerned about the announced timeline by Silfab Solar, which could allow them to restart commissioning with gases and chemicals soon.

That schedule was part of Silfab’s response to a third-party engineer’s review of the company’s chemical processes and leak prevention systems.

That review was ordered after two chemical leaks not far from Flint Hill Elementary School in March.

On Friday, both Silfab and York County asked a judge for a declaratory judgment concerning the company’s operating rights.

In a statement, the company said it is “hopeful that this action will bring finality to the uncertainty caused by a small but vocal minority.”

Silfab Solar has not given an exact date as to when those commissioning activities will begin.
