Shards of glass from building rain onto sidewalk below in uptown Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Shards of glass fell 30 to 40 feet from a building and onto the sidewalk below in uptown Charlotte Saturday.

It happened on South Tryon Street, above Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, where glass could be seen coating the sidewalk.

The Williams were uptown around lunchtime hunting for virtual treasure when glass rained down, nearly hitting them.

“It sounded like glass cracking, and I was confused by hearing that sound,” Emily Williams told Channel 9 on Tuesday.

“I saw it falling and then I heard a big crash because it hit the overhang,” Luke Williams said.

There were no serious injuries, but paramedics treated some for cuts and scratches.

“We just walked literally by this building here, and all of a sudden we heard this pop, and everyone else was like, ‘What happened?’” said resident Tonya Capers. “And we looked up and saw glass shattered, and we saw a little girl over there, and we were concerned. She then ran and screamed, and she as sitting with her family. We were trying to figure out what went on.”

Officials have not said what caused the glass to shatter.
