Union County school bus drivers worried about students not wearing masks

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Some Union County school bus drivers are frustrated, telling Channel 9 it’s tough to enforce the federal mask mandate while they are driving.

Masks are optional inside Union County Public Schools, but they’re required on buses.

“I’m highly concerned. We are in close proximity. There is no distancing, no six feet distance,” one driver said.

>> Channel 9′s Genevieve Curtis spoke to some contacts who say the difference is making enforcement more challenging. In the video at the top of this page, hear what they say the district is not doing to help them.

Statement from Union County Schools:

“UCPS staff, bus drivers and administrators are continuing discussions with students about wearing face coverings on buses. All buses also have signage to reinforce this guidance. Students are not facing disciplinary actions for not wearing a face covering.”
