Sparks flew as lightning struck JR Motorsports during storm on Wednesday

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — JR Motorsports shared their fiery start to the new year as their facility was struck by lightning during a storm on Wednesday.

Entering into its 20th year, JR Motorsports is a professional racing team co-owned by retired NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller, and NASCAR Hall of Famer Rick Hendrick.

The first video the facility shared shows a large bolt striking near semi-trucks in the back parking lot just off Cayuga Road in Mooresville.

Like most of the Charlotte region, JR Motorsports started Wednesday with heavy rain coupled with lightning. They shared the lightning strike on their property on Twitter with captions like “Sparks were flying this morning” and “Starting the year off with a bang.”

The second video shared by the company showed a lightning bolt traveling hundreds of yards down a metal fence near the front of the facility.

JR Motorsports hasn’t reported any damage from the lightning.
