Study suggests 17,000 in Union Co. live in food deserts

UNIONC COUNTY, N.C. — A new study suggests that thousands of people in Union County live in so-called "food deserts."

It is an area with a large amount of low-income people who have little or no access to affordable healthy food.

Census data from 2010 showed 17,000 people in Union County live in such areas.

The Enquirer Journal reports that lawmakers have introduced a bill this session to try and solve the problem. It aims to give grocery chains more incentives to move into food deserts.
