Superintendent gives warning after TikTok challenge costs Chester Co. schools $9K in repairs

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — There are more concerns about a TikTok challenge asking kids to damage their own schools.

Channel 9 first reported on the “Devious Licks” challenge two weeks ago. Now, the Chester County superintendent is giving a stern warning to students about the challenge, and others he said could be even more dangerous.

Videos of the “Devious Licks” challenge have been shared all over the internet and social media of students destroying and stealing school property.

“I think it’s sad,” said grandparent Tammy Williams.

It’s the same sentiment echoed by superintendent Dr. Antwon Sutton at a meeting Monday night.

On Tuesday, Sutton said the school district will have to spend about $9,000 repairing things like toilet partitions and auto-flush sensors inside school restrooms. He said the damages are putting a strain on custodial staff.

“The things they’re doing is taking money that we could use for other projects in their own schools. We’re having to divert funds to make repairs to facilities they use,” he said.

Sutton also warned board members about a new TikTok challenge that encourages students to slap teachers and record it. He offered a stern warning for students who take part in that challenge or any others.

“Any challenge that results in someone being harmed or buildings defaced, law enforcement will be brought in and we will enforce discipline consequences to the full extent of our authority,” he said.

Sutton said those damages have taken place at one local high school and one middle school. He said law enforcement is investigating each case.

He also wanted to give a warning to parents to monitor what their children are doing on social media, to keep them out of serious trouble.
