UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County voters have rejected a $200 million bond proposal to build a new county jail, leaving questions about how the county will address overcrowding and major repair needs at its current detention center.

The proposed project would have been funded through bonds and required a 3.11-cent property tax increase.

That would have added about $124 a year in property taxes for a home valued at $400,000.

Channel 9 has been reporting on ongoing issues at the Union County Detention Center, including overcrowding and the need for significant repairs.

The current jail was built in 1994 following a federal court order.

With voters rejecting the bond proposal, county leaders will have to consider how to address the facility’s ongoing challenges.
