U.S. Marshals say 4 abducted kids safe, father in custody

MONROE, N.C. — The United States Marshals located and arrested Hugo Herrera-Reyes Friday morning at the Relax Inn Hotel in Monroe.

Herrera-Reyes was wanted in Brevard County, Florida, for failing to appear on felony child

abuse charges and concealing a minor during a proceeding concerning alleged abuse of the minor.

Bench warrants were issued on April 5 by the Brevard County Circuit Court.

U.S. Marshals from the Florida/Caribbean area alerted marshals in Charlotte that Herrera-Reyes failed to appear in Florida state court to address the child abuse related warrants.

Investigative efforts determined that Herrera-Reyes fled to Monroe, NC, with his four children, to avoid apprehension and an appearance in court.

Additionally, investigators had reason to believe the children may have been in danger.

The Marshals and members of the Monroe Police Department confirmed Herrera-Reyes was staying at the Relax Inn with the four children.

Herrera-Reyes refused to come out of his hotel room but was eventually taken into custody without

further incident.

All four children were taken into police custody and provided safe temporary

shelter pending the arrival of Union County Social Service personnel.

Herrera-Reyes will be held in the Union County Jail pending extradition back to Brevard

County, Florida to face the outstanding charges.
